Step It Up! Surgeon General's
Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities

On September 9, 2015, US Surgeon General VADM Vivek H. Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., announced his national Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities. This declaration addresses a number of major health issues facing our country today. Imagine the dramatic impact we can have if the entire medical community comes together to promote walking and physical activity with patients all over the country.

Why the Health Care Sector is Needed to Help America Become a More Walkable Nation

In 2012, almost 80% of U.S. adults reported that they had visited a health care professional sometime in the past 12 months. Those encounters give health care professionals an opportunity to promote physical activity and walking as one way to be active. Many patients can walk, and walking can be easily modified to a person’s abilities. Health care professionals can help patients overcome barriers to physical activity and put them on the path to better health.
