Science Spotlight: ACSM Publishes New Expert Consensus Statement

Nov. 10, 2021
ACSM published a new expert consensus statement in Current Sports Medicine Reports (CSMR) addressing injury prevention and exercise performance during cold-weather exercise. This pronouncement replaces the previous one published in 2006, addresses deleterious aspects of exposure to cold, as well as highlights the scientific and clinical aspects of cold injury during exercise. It includes current information on the pathogenesis, nature, impacts, prevention and treatment of the most common cold injuries like frostbite, non-freezing cold injury, hypothermia, drowning and sudden cardiac death. John W. Castellani, Ph.D., and Michael J. Tipton, Ph.D., served as co-chairs of the writing group. Clare M. Eglin, Ph.D.; Tina M. Ikäheimo, Ph.D.; Hugh Montgomery, M.D., and Peter Paal, M.D., were co-authors.

ACSM Expert Consensus Statements are official pronouncements of the college and represent ACSM’s stance on the given topic. Statements are developed using a blend of research evidence and consensus of expert opinion.

The paper and a corresponding PowerPoint for academic are freely available to view and download.
