Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death in Athletes: Progress and Pitfalls

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is the leading cause of death in competitive athletes during sports and exercise. For over three decades, the aim of preventive strategies has been the early detection of cardiovascular conditions at risk of sudden death and the implementation of emergency action plans to respond efficiently in case of a cardiac emergency. This lecture reviews our progress and remaining challenges, and provides evidence-informed recommendations for the prevention of SCD in athletes.
