Paffenbarger-Blair Fund for Epidemiological Research on Physical Activity | Early Career Research Grant

Dr. Ralph S. Paffenbarger Jr., a co-recipient of the first Olympic Prize in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, made an extraordinarily generous gift by donating his share of the award to ACSM. This grant is to encourage researchers early in their career to become involved with physical activity epidemiology. Applications may focus on observational studies of physical activity and health outcomes, or on randomized controlled trials focused on physical activity and important public health issues.

Eligibility:
  • Applicants must be an ACSM national member in good standing before applying for funding. (This includes international applicants.) ACSM chapter membership alone does not fulfill this requirement.
  • Open to early career researchers within two years of receiving a postgraduate degree or completion of clinical training.
  • Previous ACSM Foundation grantees must submit final grant and expenditure reports prior to receiving another grant award.
ACSM Foundation expects grantees to:
  1. Attend the ACSM Annual Meeting Honors event the year the award is received,

  1. Present funded research at a future ACSM Annual Meeting, and

  1. Send the ACSM Foundation a copy of any publications or presentations related to the funded research.
