Brian C. Focht Student Travel Award

Established in memory of Brian C. Focht, PhD, RD, FACSM, this award assists students with travel expenses to present their cancer research at the ACSM Annual Meeting.

Dr. Brian Focht was a Professor of Kinesiology and Director of the Exercise and Behavioral Medicine Lab at The Ohio State University. His research was focused on the role of exercise in enhancing health and wellbeing, preventing chronic disease, and recovering from cancer. The Brian C. Focht Memorial Fund was established to celebrate and perpetuate Dr. Focht’s immense dedication to student mentorship and engagement within the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) community.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be an ACSM national member in good standing before applying. ACSM chapter membership alone does not fulfill this requirement.
  • Open to graduate and medical students enrolled in full-time programs and conducting research in the area of cancer. Focus areas include, but are not limited to: exercise, nutrition, implementation science, behavioral intervention, sleep, and/or technology.
  • Applicants must be the presenter of an abstract accepted at the ACSM Annual Meeting.
  • Previous recipients of the Brian C Focht Student Travel Award are not eligible to apply.

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
