GSSI-ACSM Young Investigator in Sports Nutrition Award

The GSSI-ACSM Young Investigator in Sports Nutrition Award recognizes innovative, high-quality research on the impact of nutrition or hydration on exercise physiology or performance outcomes being presented at the ACSM Annual Meeting. Recognized work will be high impact science and may include applied, mechanistic, protocol development or clinical research. All work must have the potential for practical outcomes in the translation of sports nutrition science for sports health professionals and athletes.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be an ACSM national member in good standing before applying and registered for the ACSM Annual Meeting. ACSM chapter membership alone does not fulfill this requirement.
  • Open to doctoral students enrolled in full-time programs and post-doctoral fellows conducting research in sports nutrition.
  • Applicants must be the presenter of a scientific abstract accepted at the ACSM Annual Meeting. Case studies are not eligible.
  • The research presented must be original – not published or accepted for publication, at the time of the abstract submission deadline.
  • Applicants cannot apply with the same accepted abstract to both the ACSM and European College of Sport Science (ECSS) awards in the same calendar year.
  • Previous recipients of the GSSI-ACSM Young Investigator in Sports Nutrition Award are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants directly associated or engaged in any fashion with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute will not be eligible.
  • Submitted work funded, partially or wholly, by GSSI or PepsiCo is not eligible.

Award Requirements:

  • Award recipients will be required to give five-minute presentations focused on the practical outcomes in the translation of sports nutrition science for sports health professionals and/or athletes and must be able to attend a virtual or live interactive Q&A session for final placement selection and recognition of the award.
  • Winners are encouraged to attend the ACSM Honors at the ACSM Annual Meeting.

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
