Active Voice | How Exercise May Suppress Cancer Growth

Over the last decades, the field of exercise medicine has advanced dramatically. It is now widely acknowledged that exercise provides a broad range of health-related benefits for individuals with any type of cancer and at any stage, including improved muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, chronic inflammation, immune function, pain, fatigue, anxiety and depression. As we strive to fulfill our mission in the best manner possible, we want to thank the presenters for their time and service for participating in our 2025 science webinar series. This past year, ACSM highlighted seven presenters from different international and regional chapters which included: We would also like to thank the attendees for […]

Hot Topic | Mental Toughness Is Trainable for Collegiate Athletes

In my dual role as a mental performance specialist and researcher, I spend a lot of time in collegiate weight rooms, training rooms, and team meetings. One pattern is hard to ignore: we plan physical development with surgical precision, but we often assume mental toughness will “take care of itself.” Strength, power, GPS loads, sleep, […]

How to Prescribe Exercise for Brain Health

Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are among the world’s foremost health and economic challenges, impacting over 55 million people worldwide and costing more than 1.3 trillion U.S. dollars in 2019 alone. With no imminent cure, there is an urgent need for interventions that reduce dementia risk in healthy older adults.  Physical exercise is one of the greatest […]

Active Voice | New Insights on Motivating Factors and Muscle Strengthening Activity

It is well established that muscle-strengthening activity counters the effects of age- and cancer-related muscle loss and confers multiple health benefits across the adult lifespan, including improved physical functioning and psychological well-being. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (PAGA) and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines recommend adults of all ages participate in muscle-strengthening […]

Last chance to apply for ACSM “Breaking Barriers” research grant ACSM has partnered with the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) to offer a new grant for physician members (MD/DO or international equivalent). This collaboration is designed to support innovative research focused on the health and wellbeing of traditionally underrepresented communities in sports medicine. […]

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
