From Around the Field Webinar Series Open to Students

ACSM’s From Around the Field science webinar series is designed to provide ACSM students and members with an opportunity to learn about the diverse science our members conduct. Join us for informal discussions with our ACSM members to hear more about what they study, the general research methodology they use and some of the interesting results their research is generating. In April, Gabriella Francesca Bellissimo, PhD, ACSM-EP, ACSM-CPT, from the College of Idaho will present “Benefits of Body Weight Training” highlighting the adverse health effects of physical inactivity and the importance of aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercise while also addressing common barriers to participation. Dr. Bellissimo will also discuss the potential of bodyweight exercise as a practical and effective solution for achieving both aerobic and strength-training benefits, and the presentation will conclude with a discussion on future directions for bodyweight exercise and its applicability across diverse populations. Join us on April 17, from noon to  1 p.m. ET, for this interesting discussion. This event is free for ACSM members. Register here.

Join Us for a Nutrition-Focused Webinar in Partnership With PINES

ACSM and the Professionals in Nutrition for Exercise and Sport (PINES) have teamed up to provide you with the latest nutrition information. On April 23 at noon ET, Allison D. Sanchez, PhD, RD, CSSD, from the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence, and Enette Larson-Meyer, PhD, RD, CSSD, FACSM, professor and director of the Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism Laboratory at Virginia Tech, will discuss “Weight Gain for Performance.”This presentation will cover the current performance nutrition recommendations for intentional weight gain for athletes and military personnel, evaluate the quality and quantity of the current literature supporting weight gain regimens for athletes and military personnel and end with a discussion about the current knowledge gaps related to healthy weight gain. Drs. Sanchez and Larson-Meyer will also be available to answer your questions in a live Q&A session after the presentation. Be sure to join us for this event discounted for ACSM and PINES members. *By registering for this webinar, you acknowledge that your registration data will be shared with PINES.Register here.

Faculty and staff from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School are looking for sports medicine providers to participate in an anonymous survey examining trends in sports medicine provider use and recommendation of supplements. The purpose of this study is to assess the popularity of supplement use and rationale by sports medicine providers. Better understanding of provider trends and motivations could aid in the development of more accessible, standardized guidelines for providers to reference when treating patients. The study has received IRB approval from Rutgers University (IRB Number: Pro2024001474). All responses are voluntary and anonymous, and no IP addresses will be collected or stored. If you are a sports medicine physician who treats athletes in the United States, you can participate by accessing the survey here. This research has no connection to ACSM, and data collection and the sharing of results are not associated with ACSM. Please reach out to Ilona Schwarz, MD, via email at ilona.schwarz@rutgers.edu for more information.

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
