ACSM Names Incoming Editor-in-Chief of Open Access Journal

The American College of Sports Medicine is pleased to announce Jennifer J. Heisz, Ph.D., as the next Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of Exercise, Sport, and Movement (ESM). Dr. Heisz was selected from among a pool of many talented and qualified candidates through a rigorous application and interview process.

Dr. Heisz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University. She served as an Associate Editor and the Associate Editor-in-Chief of ESM under inaugural EIC Dr. Gary Liguori and has been the Interim EIC of the journal since 2023. In addition, Dr. Heisz has extensive review and publication experience, including her book, Move the Body, Heal the Mind. As the leader of the ESM, the EIC is responsible for ensuring the journal’s mission and scope are considered during the recruitment, submission, and publication of articles, and that all articles published in the journal are scientifically rigorous.

ESM is an international, open access, peer-reviewed journal focusing on all aspects of exercise science and sports medicine. The scope of the journal is purposely broad to encompass scientific, clinical, public health, community, and policy topics in all areas related to sports and exercise medicine, exercise-related physiology, nutrition, metabolism, and physical fitness. GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
