Heather Chambliss, PhD, FACSM, Strategic Planning Committee Chair

We have crossed the halfway point of our three-year strategic plan, and ACSM volunteers, committees and staff continue to diligently work on the five bold goals, making measurable progress across key areas. Each goal is advancing at its own pace, with a strong focus on alignment and process improvements.  For only the second time in ACSM’s history, staff’s performance goals in 2025 are directly linked to the organization’s strategic goals. Everyone is pulling in the same direction and building momentum!

In collaboration with the Budget and Finance Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) adopted a strategic alignment process to assist committees and staff in aligning new initiatives and programs to the strategic plan. This process supports the generation of new ideas while also ensuring resources and objectives fit within our strategic framework.

If you have feedback on this process or would like to learn more, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

As we look ahead toward the next 6 months, we are focused on reporting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), identifying gaps in strategies and tactics, and strengthening collaboration across committees. And don’t forget – planning for the next plan!

We look forward to providing quarterly updates moving forward!

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
