Active Voice | With Resistance Training, Load is Only Half the Story

For decades, one question has dominated resistance-training research: How much weight should we lift? Many studies have compared heavy and light loads to identify the optimal stimulus for maximizing strength and muscle hypertrophy. These investigations have shaped coaching practice, informed resistance-training guidelines, and fueled one of the longest-running debates in exercise science. Yet this question […]

Hot Topic | Being Outside Makes You Feel Better

Nature as a therapeutic intervention is a practice that dates back centuries but has only recently gained empirical legitimacy. From Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) in Japan to green exercise initiatives in urban areas of the United States and Europe, nature-based approaches to health are gaining traction. Mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, and stress-related conditions, are […]

Active Voice | How and Why Does Acute Exercise Boost our Brain?

Our cognitive function, the vital mental processes that allow us to focus, reason, and make decisions, shapes how we navigate the world. For decades, scientists in fields like sports science have extensively investigated how a single bout of exercise improves cognitive function. Yet, the exact brain pathways behind these exercise-induced cognitive improvements have long remained […]

Staying Active with Asthma: Why Air Quality Matters for Healthy Communities

For many people living with asthma, being physically active can feel complicated.  Some worry that exercise will trigger symptoms or make breathing more difficult. Yet research continues to show that regular physical activity is one of the most important ways people with asthma can support their overall health and quality of life.  As summer begins, […]

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
