The Exercise, Sport and Movement (ESM) journal editors recognize that the cost of publishing open access (the article processing charge, or APC) is often a burden for authors. To help address this burden, the ESM editors are proud to announce the launch of the ESM Student APC Assistance Fund on July 1, 2025.

Details:

  • Provides APC assistance for student-led papers accepted in ESM
  • Provides $1000 toward APC for qualifying papers
  • Can be used in addition to 20% APC discount for ACSM members who are corresponding authors on ESM accepted papers

Eligibility:

  • To qualify, a student must be the first author on the paper
  • Student status is determined based on ACSM student membership criteria (students do not have to be ACSM members to be eligible)
  • Only available on the following article types: Original Investigation, Registered Report (stage 1), Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis, and Graphical Review
  • Not available on papers with corresponding authors from low- and middle-income countries (based on Research4Life eligibility criteria) who automatically receive full (100%) and partial (50%) APC waivers, respectively
  • Only the first 10 qualifying accepted papers each year apply. No additional application is necessary.

The ESM journal is an international open access, peer-reviewed publication with a broad scope, encompassing scientific, clinical, public health, community and policy topics in all areas related to sports and exercise medicine, exercise-related physiology, nutrition, metabolism and physical fitness. Manuscripts addressing movement, fitness, exercise, physical activity, health promotion, sport, and prevention and treatment of injury and disease are welcome. Visit the ESM website to read the latest issue or visit the information for authors  site to prepare your next submission.

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
