Hot Topic | Exercise as a Pain Management Modality

Pain does not always need a pill, sometimes a barbell might be part of the necessary prescription. This idea may seem counterintuitive; when experiencing pain, the thought of exercising may sound daunting. However, exercise is a powerful stimulus, a fact routinely highlighted in health and fitness literature. There are countless studies and articles that cover […]

Active Voice | Combined Cold Exposure and Exercise Slows Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) Progression

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a growing health concern, affecting approximately one in four people worldwide. Despite its prevalence, effective treatment strategies remain limited. While diet and exercise are widely recommended, little is known about how combining cold exposure with exercise might influence NAFLD progression—and the molecular mechanisms behind it. To explore this, […]

Rural-dwelling individuals have higher rates of physical inactivity and chronic diseases — as well as lower life expectancies and poorer health outcomes — than those living in urban areas. The implementation of physical activity interventions should be encouraged in such communities to improve health and reduce disease risk. However, there are multiple considerations unique to […]

Finding Green Flags in Journal Quality

Hands on a keyboard

In honor of Publication Integrity Week, and with so many scientific journals to choose from, it is important to discuss how to determine journal quality. There are several indexes that provide journal rankings using a variety of algorithms. One of the most well-known is the impact factor (IF) which is calculated by Clarivate Analytics for journals […]

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
