Call for Applicants: 2025 Drinkwater Leadership Award

Applications are now open for the Drinkwater Leadership Award in Women’s Health, Sport & Physical Activity to mid-career women researchers, clinicians and certified professionals who demonstrate exceptional leadership in women’s health, sport and physical activity.

The awardee will receive a $5,000 award and complimentary tickets to the 2025 ACSM Annual Meeting in Atlanta, the Josephine L. Rathbone & Barbara L. Drinkwater memorial breakfast, and the Honors reception.

The award is given in honor of Barbara L. Drinkwater, PhD, FACSM, who served as an ACSM trustee, vice president and president (1988-89) and the first woman to be elected to all three positions. Dr. Drinkwater was a role model in ACSM, receiving the Citation and Honor Awards and delivering both the D.B. Dill Historical Lecture and the Wolffe Memorial Lecture. The award is offered through generous donations to the Women’s Health, Sport & Physical Activity Fund. Major donors to the fund include Larry Boot, Barbara Drinkwater, PhD, FACSM; and Linda and James Pivarnik, PhD, FACSM.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be an ACSM national member in good standing before applying. ACSM chapter membership alone does not fulfill this requirement.
  • Applicants must be mid-career researchers, clinicians and certified professionals.
  • Applicants must be female.
  • Applicants must demonstrate exceptional leadership in women’s health, sport and physical activity through research focused on women, clinical care of women or other work focused primarily on women.
  • Consideration will also be given to nontraditional nominees demonstrating leadership in women’s sport, reflecting Dr. Drinkwater’s passion for Women Sport International.

Award requirements:

  • Winners must attend the ACSM Honors reception at the 2025 ACSM Annual Meeting; one complimentary ticket will be provided.
  • Winners must attend the Josephine L. Rathbone & Barbara L. Drinkwater Memorial Breakfast Honoring Women in Leadership at the 2025 ACSM Annual Meeting; one complimentary ticket will be provided.
  • Winners are encouraged to volunteer for an ACSM committee if not already serving on one. The awardee is also encouraged to attend activities of the SHI-Women, Sport & Physical Activity.

Call for Travel Award Applications: Students in Basic Science Research

There is still time for undergraduate, graduate and medical students enrolled in full-time programs to apply for the 2025 Science Integration & Leadership Committee (SILC) Basic Science Award.

This one-time award provides $500 to help defray the costs of traveling to the 2025 ACSM Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

Applicants must:

  • Be an ACSM national member in good standing before applying. ACSM chapter membership alone does not fulfill this requirement. 
  • Have undergraduate, graduate and medical student status enrolled in full-time programs. Applicants with a terminal degree of any type (PhD, EdD, MD, DPH, etc.) at the time of application are not eligible.
  • Be the first author and presenter of an abstract accepted in the basic science category at the 20035 ACSM Annual Meeting.
  • Not a previous Basic Science Award winner.

The SILC Basic Science Award recognizes excellence in basic science research from students to present their scholarly work during the ACSM annual meeting. The award will be determined by the overall impact and quality of the research presented. Winners are required to attend the Basic Science Reception at the ACSM annual meeting to be recognized for receiving the award. Winners are encouraged to attend the ACSM Honors reception at the ACSM annual meeting.

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
