Last chance to apply for ACSM “Breaking Barriers” research grant

ACSM has partnered with the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) to offer a new grant for physician members (MD/DO or international equivalent). This collaboration is designed to support innovative research focused on the health and wellbeing of traditionally underrepresented communities in sports medicine. The purpose of this grant mechanism is to foster research that can “break barriers” and grow the evidence base supporting historically underserved communities within sports medicine. If selected as a grant recipient, the PI must be a member of both AMSSM and ACSM throughout the 2-year funding period. The maximum project budget is $20,000 (direct + indirect expenses).

Full details on the eligibility, application process, evaluation criteria, timeline, templates, and additional requirements can be found on the Request for Proposals (RFP) or visit the ACSM Foundation website.

Application Deadline: December 17, 2025 (5pm ET)

Award winners announced: April 2026

Research Volunteer Opportunity for Healthcare Professionals in Elite Sport

McMaster University, in collaboration with universities in Germany, Canada, and Australia, is inviting athlete health care professionals to participate in a research study titled, “How are you? Mental health and adverse experiences of health professionals working with elite athletes.”  The purpose of this study is to better understand the mental health, harassment, and abuse experiences of health professionals in elite sport, to help inform prevention and support strategies.  Eligible participants include physicians, physical therapists, massage therapists, dietitians, psychiatrists, psychologists, chiropractors, athletic therapists, and others working with elite athletes.  Participation involves a brief, anonymous online survey (about 10 minutes). Responses are confidential, stored securely via REDCap, and no personal identifying information will be collected. Participation is voluntary, and data will be destroyed after 10 years. This study has been approved by the Hamilton Integrated Research Ethics Board (HIREB #19104).  This research has no connection to the ACSM and data collection and sharing of results are not associated with the ACSM.  If you would like to participate, please follow this LINK.  For questions, please contact Dr. Margo Mountjoy (MD, PhD) at mmsportdoc@mcmaster.ca.

ICYMI: ACSM’s “Plantar Fascia: Preventive Biomechanics” webinar

In November, ACSM hosted Dr. Lukas Krumpl an Assistant Professor from Washington State University, as part of ACSM’s From Around the Field monthly webinar series. If you were unable to attend and would like to view this cutting-edge presentation, the webinar recording is now available for viewing on the ACSM Learning Management System (LMS). ACSM National Members can view the presentation only version of the presentation HERE for free, or the full course version with the opportunity to earn 1.0 CEC can be accessed by members and non-members here: Plantar Fascia: Preventative Biomechanics | American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

The presentation will cover a review of the literature of fascia and strength training, including current practices and protocols used in research and in clinics. In addition, Dr. Krumpl introduced ‘prophylomechanics’, a preventative approach utilizing mechanical loading, as a possible connection with strength training. The webinar ends with Q&A session that is not to be missed. Learn the latest on risk factors and treatment recommendations of plantar fasciitis today!

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
