EIM-OC Franklin Microgrant | Program Grant

Barry Franklin headshotACSM EIMOC Logo Black with ColorThanks to the generosity of ACSM past president Barry Franklin and his wife, Linda, three types of grants are offered under the Franklin Microgrant Program. These grants are meant to defray the costs of conducting Exercise Is Medicine-On Campus (EIM-OC) interventions, performing high-quality data collection and analysis of EIM-OC programming.

  • The PA (Physical Activity) Promotion Grant ($500) is awarded to EIM-OC leadership teams aiming to provide, promote and/or evaluate physical activity or exercise opportunities for campus community members.
  • The PA Screening and Education Grant ($750) is awarded to EIM-OC leadership teams aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of physical activity screening and education initiatives.
  • The PA Assessment and Referral Grant ($1,250) is awarded to EIM-OC leadership teams aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of the campus health assessment and referral process and/or exercise prescription services.
Eligibility:
  • Applicants must be an ACSM national member in good standing before applying for funding (including international applicants). ACSM chapter membership alone does not fulfill this requirement.
  • Applicant institution must be a registered EIM-OC institution.
  • Applicants should be full-time faculty or staff of the applicant institution.
  • Applications must indicate how students will be involved in the proposed initiatives.
ACSM Foundation expects grantees to:
  1. Present funded research on the EIM-OC Webinar in Fall 2027.
  2. Present funded research at a future ACSM Annual Meeting and/or Chapter Meeting.
  3. Send the ACSM Foundation a copy of any publications or presentations of the funded research.

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
