Committees and Volunteer Opportunities

The Aging Special Interest Group (AIG) has Committees and Non-committee volunteer opportunities. As of 2026, the AIG has three subcommittees:

1) Communications (coordinates social media campaigns; maintains and updates the AIG listserv)

2) Collaboration (promotes collaboration and mentoring within the AIG)

3) Review (critically appraises abstracts submitted to the AIG thematic poster session and research awards).

E-mail us at acsm.aigchairs@gmail.com if you want to get involved in any of the above.

Awards

Open to pre- and post-doctoral trainees

AIG members simply submit their main ACSM abstract for consideration by the AIG Review Subcommittee. Research topics must be broadly related to physical activity and aging. There are three (3) pre-doctoral awards each worth $600, $500, and $400 and given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed trainee, respectively. There is a single award worth $650 given to a post-doctoral trainee.

Open to investigators of ANY rank, including those in faculty positions

AIG members submit either their main ACSM abstract or an entirely new abstract for consideration by the AIG Review Subcommittee. Research topics must be broadly aligned to physical activity and aging, AND must also include an objective metric of body composition using the technology manufactured by the award sponsor (e.g. Dual X-ray Absorptiometry). Applicants must also provide a 2 – 3 sentence statement of how their particular choice of body composition technology advances the field of physical activity and aging.

AIG members can apply for either award if eligible but will only receive one award if successful.

Events

For 2026, the AIG will host the following events:

1) The Mid-Year Meeting (virtual)

2) The ACSM Annual Meeting (in-person)

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
