Charles M. Tipton Student Research Award

Charles Tipton Headshot

The Charles M. Tipton Student Research Award recognizes two students with the most outstanding research projects in exercise science of the year. Applicants are judged on the quality of the research project as well as the extent of the student’s participation in the project.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be an ACSM national member in good standing before applying. ACSM chapter membership alone does not fulfill this requirement.
  • Open to graduate and medical students enrolled in full-time programs in basic or clinical exercise science or sports medicine and recent graduates (within one year of the application date) submitting research completed before graduation.
  • Applicants must be the first author and presenter of an abstract on exercise science accepted at the ACSM Annual Meeting.
  • The work reported in the abstract must have been completed for academic credit toward completion of a graduate or medical degree.
  • Previous recipients of the Charles M. Tipton Student Research Award are not eligible to apply.

Award Requirements:

  • Winners are encouraged to attend the ACSM Honors at the ACSM Annual Meeting.

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
