ACSM’s From Around Field Science Webinar Series Open to Students

ACSM’s From Around the Field science webinar series is designed to provide ACSM students and members with an opportunity to learn about the diverse science our members conduct. Join us for informal discussions with our ACSM members to hear more about what they study, the general research methodology they use and some of the interesting results their research is generating. In May, Amber Kinsey, PhD, and Nashira Brown, PhD, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham will present “Promoting Physical Activity in Priority Populations.” This webinar will explore the journey of two scientists who began their careers in exercise physiology and transitioned into the broader field of health promotion. Initially unaware of the complexities surrounding health behaviors, their work now emphasizes the importance of understanding multilevel determinants of physical activity. The presentation will also highlight strategies for informing the development of physical activity interventions to meet the unique needs of priority populations. Join us May 22 from noon to 1 p.m. for this interesting discussion. This event is free for ACSM members. Register here.

May EIM-OC Webinar

Don’t miss the May EIM-OC webinar, “Gold Standard in Mental Health” on May 13 at noon ET.In honor of Mental Health Month, the Exercise is Medicine® — On Campus committee will explore how Shenandoah University partnered with its counseling center to achieve Gold-level status. Presenter and EIM-OC advisor Jessica Peacock will provide evidence for the role of physical activity in mental health treatment, how physical activity can be integrated into the referral system, strategies for promoting mental health benefits and more! Learn how your campus can collaborate with health partners to create a comprehensive support system that champions both physical and mental well-being. Register here.

ACSM’s Healthy Youth Sports Podcast

Check out the latest episode of ACSM’s Healthy Youth Sports Podcast series, featuring Lee Taft, CSCS, FAFS, athletic movement specialist, coach and global educator in speed development for young athletes. This episode will cover how athletes of all levels can enhance their speed beyond genetics, highlighting the ideal age for young athletes to start speed training and distinguishing between speed and agility. It also emphasizes the crucial role of foundational movement skills and outlines key elements of effective youth speed workouts while cautioning against overtraining. The discussion also covers the influence of strength training on speed and the benefits of multi-sport participation for long-term athletic growth. FASEB Hosts 2 Science Research Conferences in Nashville

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) will host the Machines on Genesconference May 18-21. This event will cover all aspects that govern the central building blocks of life — DNA replication, transcription and translation — as well as activities that impact these processes such as DNA repair, DNA editing and RNA editing. There will be a special emphasis on how they work, how they interact with one another and how they may be used as diagnostic tools or as targets for novel therapies. Regular Registration Deadline ends Sunday, May 11, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Visit the FASEB events page for more information on agenda, speakers, housing and FAQs. Register here.

In addition, the Mechanisms of Mitochondrial DNA Mutation and Repair conference will take placeJune 1-5 in Nashville, Tennessee. This brand-new conference will focus on understanding how mitochondrial DNA mutations occur in the germ line and somatic tissues with age, and how they contribute to common diseases including neurodegeneration and cancer. The conference will also cover mitochondrial DNA’s molecular and cellular consequences and new approaches to repair and remove mutations. This conference is especially aimed at scientific and professional development. Early-career researchers and those from historically excluded groups are especially encouraged to attend. Regular Registration Deadline ends June 5, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET.Visit the FASEB events page for conference information. Register here.

Both FASEB conferences include workshops, meet-the-expert lunch sessions and career development sessions in addition to social and networking events and hosted meals.

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
