A Preview of ACSM’s 2027–2029 Strategic Plan
2 min read

ACSM has reached an important milestone in developing its next strategic plan! At its August meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the proposed goals and strategies organized around four pillars:

  • Innovation & Growth
  • Experience & Engagement
  • Scientific Impact
  • Operational Efficiency

The approved plan reflects input from committee chairs, volunteers, staff, the Strategic Planning Committee, and the Board over the past year. It also incorporates lessons from the current plan, including the need for a more focused scope, clearer ownership, stronger coordination, and realistic alignment with organizational resources.

Next Steps: ACSM will begin developing and prioritizing the tactics that will turn these strategies into action. This process will differ from the previous planning cycle. The Board will help establish priorities, the Strategic Planning Committee will translate that direction into a coordinated set of tactics, and committees and staff will contribute their subject-matter and operational expertise to determine how the work can best be accomplished.

Committee staff liaisons will begin discussions about committee direction with Chairs and committees which will support the identification of opportunities, risks, dependencies, or gaps. Additional guidance and opportunities for input, including office hours, will be shared during the tactic-development period.

Not every committee will develop its own separate list of tactics, and not every idea will become a strategic-plan tactic. The goal is a cohesive, achievable plan that reduces duplication, reflects staff and volunteer capacity, and focuses ACSM’s collective efforts on the work with the greatest mission impact and strategic value.

If you have questions, please reach out to Strategic Planning Committee Chair Heather Chambliss or your committee staff liaison.

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
