ACSM Foundation Research Grants – Deadline Quickly Approaching

Now is the time to apply for the numerous ACSM Foundation awards available to doctoral students and early career professionals. This year, there are eight ACSM Foundation grants available:

AMSSM/ACSM Breaking Barriers Research Grant I Clinician Research Grant

Carl V. Gisolfi Memorial Fund I Doctoral Student Grant

Clinical Sports Medicine Endowment I Clinician Research Grant

EIM-OC Franklin Microgrant I Program Grant

Paffenberger-Blair Fund for Epidemiological Research on Physical Activity I Early Career Research Grant

Raymond A. Weiss Research Endowment I Graduate Student Research Grant

Research Endowment I Early Career Research Grant

Xero Shoes’ Minimal Footwear Research Grant I Doctoral Student & Early Career Grant

To make the application process easier, the ACSM Foundation Applicant Portal allows applicants to collaborate with their advisors and save materials during the submission process through a user friendly submission experience.

Once registered with an account, enter the ACSM Foundation Application portal site and have a look around to find the various application materials required (e.g., CV, abstract, budget) to complete the submission. Samples of the application grants are also listed on the site for reference.

The ACSM Research Review Committee will review all submissions through an NIH-style review process and notification of application status should be provided by March 2027.

Applying for an ACSM Foundation grant will provide opportunities for articulating research plans and developing grantsmanship skills with detailed feedback from reviewers. Those fortunate enough to be awarded an ACSM Foundation grant will have:

  • a prestigious addition to your resume/CV
  • financial assistant to collect data that can be used to inform the development of future studies and to compete for additional grant funding
  • possible new collaborations with other researchers
  • results may be published in a scholarly journal

Thinking of applying but have questions, such as:

  • What grants are available?
  • Am I eligible?
  • How do I apply?
  • What is the process used to evaluate my submission?
  • What are the benefits of applying for an ACSM Foundation grant?
  • How might an ACSM grant boost my research activities?

Reach out to us at foundation@ascm.org for answers or review “Write Grants That Win, an ExSci Careers Explored Webinar” for advice from members of the ACSM Research Review Committee.

The Foundation’s research grant program began in 1989 and in 2025, the Foundation awarded ~$72,500 among 12 student researchers and young investigators. The deadline for applications for this year’s ACSM Foundation Research Grants is Nov. 13, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

GSSI Pre-Conference

The Physiology of Hydration: More Than Water Alone

This session explores the physiology of hydration through an integrated lens—examining how carbohydrate, sodium, flavor, and fluid interact to influence intake, absorption, retention, and performance. We’ll review current research on fluid balance, osmotic drivers, and palatability, highlighting mechanisms that underpin voluntary intake and thermoregulation. Attendees will gain insight into individualized strategies, including sweat profiling and timing approaches, to optimize euhydration and mitigate performance decrements associated with >2% body-mass loss. Practical applications will be linked to laboratory- and field-based research, ensuring translation from bench to field. This pre-conference equips you with evidence-based tools to support athlete hydration across diverse environments and sporting contexts.
